২০০১ সালের ৭ সেপ্টেম্বর, জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদের গৃহীত প্রস্তাব নম্বর ৫৫/২৮২ অনুসারে ২০০২ সাল থেকে প্রতিবছরের ২১ সেপ্টেম্বর তারিখে “আন্তর্জাতিক শান্তি দিবস” হিসেবে উদ্যাপনের সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়।
